As a young reader (even in my older years) it did not occur to me to think much about the writer. My focus was on the book and the content of the book; especially in nonfiction texts. Reading well meant – getting the words right, remembering the important facts and details, and holding them in my head…at least until the text on Friday was over! I never considered the human being behind those words and ideas; the writers thoughts, intentions and purposes for writing. Thank goodness I read differently now!
This week's lesson is all about helping students becoming the reader I never was. A reader who thinks not only of the meaning being conveyed in the text, but also the writer expressing that meaning. This is what I call reading with the writer in mind:
