I am so thrilled to be able to spend the entire week with students talking about the importance of nonfiction study. Each day I will have a chance to explore the strategies that readers and writers use to communicate information across texts, mediums, and content areas.
I want to ensure that student understand that literacy is more than reading and writing stories. Literacy also includes reading, writing, and communicating information. I want students to see these strategies and literacies as life skills that come into play everyday; not just in science and social studies classes.
Here's a peek at my first lesson:
I always begin the conversation with my reading/writing territories; giving them a quick snapshot into my literate life. Recording one hour of my day, I interacted with more than 20 styles of information, in multiple forms and formats. I engaged in these experiences and texts for multiple purposes in order to accomplish both long and short term goals.
It is a powerful way to show students the kinds of reading and writing we do, why we do it, how it helps, and the strategies we use to help us manage the work.
