Seth Godin never ceases to amaze me, and his latest undertaking is no exception. Over the last fifteen years, Godin has written twelve best-selling books about breaking all the traditional rules in marketing and business. His thirteenth book and new project entitled “The Domino Project” may be the biggest rule-breaker yet.
The Domino Project is named after the domino effect—one powerful idea spreads down the line, pushing from person to person. The Project represents a fundamental shift in the way books (and digital media based on books) have always been published. Eventually consisting of a small cadre of stellar authors, this is a publishing house organized around a new distribution channel, one that wasn’t even a fantasy when most publishers began.
What Godin is trying to do with the Domino Project is make books “spreadable” by reinventing what it means to be a writer, publisher, and member of a passionate tribe.
Here’s how Seth described the project and selected his Tribe to carry out the project’s mission to reinvents books in the viral age of social media:
We’re on a mission to create a domino effect around the world, spreading ideas to people who care. We’re reinventing publishing, and that means we need a bunch of smart, vocal, passionate and connected people to help us do so.
How do you know if you’re a good fit? You are: a digital native who blogs, tweets and instagrams like nobody’s business. You take risks, challenge conventions, and care about reinventing outdated systems. You’re inspired by great thinkers and organizations like TED, and you love spreading ideas that matter. When you read a great book, you immediately want to share it with others. It changed your life and you want it to change other people’s lives too. If that sounds like you, this is your opportunity.
We’ll pick 50 or so people and the mission will last around six months, with the potential to go longer. We’ve never done this before, and though we certainly might fail, we’ll definitely create impact.
