As a young teacher, Angela Maiers had an epiphany: people need to matter. They need to be noticed, valued, and honored. Significance is even more important than success. Ever since, the You Matter message has been changing hearts, minds, and lives.
In a June 2011 talk at TEDxDesMoines titled You Matter, Angela spoke of how these two words can change minds and change lives, if we understand them and leverage them in the right way. This talk has been viewed 120,000+ times on YouTube and ignited a global movement.
People reacted powerfully to this call to action, undertaking awe-inspiring quests to address problems in our world. Choose2Matter was created in response to this breathtaking reaction. It is a powerful call to action that invites people to make mattering a way of life.
Two small words…#YouMatter. Can change a heart, change a mind, change a world!
MATTERGRAMs are creative, interpersonal messages to let people know you are thinking of them and that they MATTER, not just to you, but to the world. Much like Google does with its 20% Time, Genius Hour is one (or more) periods per week where students work on passion projects. After watching Daniel Pink speak in November 2011, Angela tweeted, “We need to have a Genius Hour in school.” This and other factors led to Genius Hour becoming a global education phenomenon, with thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students across the world participating.
- What if we respected and trusted our students as Google does its engineers?
- What would happen if students were given the time, resources and opportunity to pursue what they were most passionate about?
- How would this impact student engagement and students’ perception of school?
Genius Hour is a chance for students to ask themselves What matters to me? What breaks my heart about the world today? The answers to those questions could point to their passion project.
